Yankees’ Carlos Rodon uses change, diverse arsenal to close O’s

Baltimore-Carlos Rodón has shown the entire season that he is no longer a pitcher with two pitch, but he put an exclamation mark on that case on Saturday.

After the end of what his best year has been in chalk stripes, Rodón leaned on a particularly sharp change to cruise through seven strong innings in the 6-1 victory of the Yankees over the Orioles.

For the first time since 2018, neither the Four-Seam Fastball was nor the slider Rodón’s most used throw.

Instead, it was his change that he threw 32 times (out of 96 fields) to generate 12 swings and missions, including three of his eight strikeouts.

‘I thought exactly like Ben [Rice] Called that game well set up, “said Rodón.” He called the fields, I just tried to perform. The outer track was open with the fastball, I just tried to tunnel that with the change. I was lucky to have a good one today. ‘

Two nights after watching Max Fried, the Orioles dominated with his own change, Rodón followed his lead.

The left -handed spread four hits (two of them Infield Singles) while they only walked one, which changed to the only point he allowed, in the seventh inning.

‘[The changeup] Was probably as good as I saw it, “said Aaron Boone manager.” He used it a lot, but then already finished the other. You see the peckability, the pitcher who now seeing is the zinc shed, the four-seam, little more life at the end of the game when he knows he is by the end and he comes back a bit for more. But the change and slider were both really good for him tonight. Just a strong outing in what has been a very strong year for him. “

Rodón took his career-high 17th victory while he left his ERA to 3.04 in his 32nd start of the season.

Starting at ShortStop for the third consecutive game, Anthony Volpe (2-out-3, Walk, Steal) reached the base three times three times the base for the second time.

He had only reached three times in a match once in 67 games.

He also handed in a stronger defense because he looked better since he received a cortison injection in his left shoulder.

That would by no means stop the questions about whether Volpe or José Caballero will start by the play -offs for the Yankees, but they give Volpe at least a bit of run to prove that he can be the man they believe he can be.

“Hopefully he finds his rhythm,” said Boone.

Aaron Judge started on Saturday in the right field for the third consecutive match, the first time he did this since he returned from his judge Elleboogflexor voltage. Boone was planning him to do with Giancarlo Stanton on Sunday, would probably get the day off.

“It feels like it’s improving,” said Boone. “He said,” Yes, let’s go. Let’s go. ” Keep taking it every day. “

Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz, one of the best Yankees prospects, made his Triple-A debut on Saturday and got four points on eight hits while they hit three over five innings with SCRANTON/WILKES-Barre.

The 22-year-old right-handed, taken from the Red Sox last season for catcher Carlos Narváez, was initially planned to start Game 3 of Double-A Somerset’s Playoff series on Friday, but they were eliminated in two games.

So Rodriguez-Cruz, after the end of a great season between High-A and Double-A, was rewarded with a bump on Triple-A.
