The Mets Flip-Flopping their Piggybacking Starters for Sunday’s game against the Nationals, a possible indication of their postseason plans.
Sean Manaaea starts the serial final with Clay Holmes planned to follow him out of the bullpen, a reversal from the last time that the experienced Hurlers threw on Tuesday like a tandem against the Padres.
Holmes, a closer in previous years, is more used to a bull pen role with 307 exemption performances in his eight-year-old MLB career, including two All-Star performances with the Yankees.
The 32-year-old Righty Holmes drew a three-year-old deal with a value of $ 38 million with the Mets in Free Agency to be a starter, and he has thrown a career-high 155 innings for 30 starts.
That represents 85 more than his previous career height of 70 with the Pirates and Yankees in 2021.
Manaea has usually served as a starter in his 10-year career, with only 32 relief performances among his 240 games.
The 33-year-old Lefty was again signed for a three-year-old deal worth $ 75 million after 12-6 with a 3.47 ERA in 32 Starts for the Mets in 2024, but he was sidelined in the first half of this season with a sloping problem.
“It helps when we make these decisions the fact that they have made it in the past,” said Mets-manager Carlos Mendoza before the 5-3, 11-aftering loss of the Mets for the Nationals on Citi Field. “Again, they want to start, and we consider them as starters. But this is where we are, given where we are.
“They are all on board. They understand. But when we make those decisions, they know what is needed to get out of the bull pen. It’s a very different routine, but they have done it earlier, so that helps.”
Holmes threw four innings of two-run ball against San Diego, and Manaea worked the last five, allowing one earned run in a victory of 8-3 Mets.
Mendoza acknowledged the regular arrangement of Nationals with Lefties James Wood, CJ Abrams, Daylen Lile and Luis García Jr. Near the top was a factor in the switch.
Asked if there is a similar plan for Sunday’s game, Mendoza said: “I think it all depends on what the game will tell you, what kind of line -up we get, the way he throws the ball where the score is.

The Mets recently trusted three rookies in their rotation: the starter Nolan McLean of Saturday, Plus Brandon Sproat and Jonah Tong.
All-Star Lefty David Peterson is tagged for an ERA of 10.90 during his last four trips, while the struggles of former Ace Kodai Senga have continued since he was degraded to Triple-A Syracuse.
He will throw a session of live Batting exercise this week, but Mendoza has admitted that Senga is “no definitive” to make the postseason selection.
