Women’s Super League: Arsenal Go Top, Man City Get Off The Mark – Soccer News

Alessia Russo scored two goals and offered an assist when Arsenal came from behind to beat West Ham 5-1 and go to the top of the Super League for women.

The hammers came to the score sheet after just five minutes when Daphne van Domselaar parried the ball in her own net when he tried to catch a cross from Shekiera Martinez.

Arsenal managed to level the game in the 21st minute via Frida Maanum. Beth Mead succeeded in choosing Maanum with a brilliant pass that went through Oona Siren’s legs, and the Norwegian midfielder hit the ball past Megan Walsh.

The Gunners then made a fast start of the second half when Stina Blackstenius found the top left corner after a backheel assist from Russo in the 52nd minute, before Caitlin Foord went home from Mariona Caldentey’s Cross 10 minutes later.

Russo closed the victory with a bang, first shot the ball in the right corner from the edge of the box in the 89th minute before scored from the penalty spot in extra time.

Manchester City took their first WSL victory of the season after they also came from a goal to beat Brighton 2-1 at home.

The visitors took the lead after 14 minutes through Fran Kirby. The first effort by Michelle Agyemang was well saved by Khiara Keating, but the rebound fell on Rachel Mclauchlan and she imposed Kirby for a first finish up close.

Brighton managed to hold their lead on the way to the break, but City set the pressure in the second half when they produced 2.15 expected goals (XG) of six shots on goal in the second period.

Khadija Shaw scored the equalizer for the city two minutes before the hour with a brilliant dull head of the cross of Leila Ouahabi, before Yui Hasegawa scored the winner in the 74th minute with a composed finish in the top right corner.

Data Debrief: Mead the famous enemy for West Ham

Arsenal has now left four of their five WSL matches, but this season has scored nine goals in their opening matches of two competitions.

Mead, who became the first player who reached 50 WSL assists last weekend, now has eight goal assisters against West Ham, most of them she has against every team in the competition. It is the joint of each player against a single opponent in the WSL history (Ellen White 8 V Liverpool and Vivianne Miedema 8 against Brighton).

In the meantime, Shaw continued her beautiful scoring run against Brighton and now found the back of the Net a competition record nine times in seven games against the sea lions.
