It came as a surprise that Edwards opted to leave Boro in the midst of a promotion challenge that saw the club finish second in the Championship, joining a team that was bottom of the Premier League.
Wolves are winless in the first eleven games of the season and, with just two points to their name, look destined for defeat.
But the 42-year-old couldn’t resist the call from a club close to his heart. The former centre-back spent four years of his playing career at Molineux, where he made 111 appearances in gold. After retiring in 2013, he started his managerial journey as U18 coach at Wolves.
Speaking ahead of his first game against Crystal Palace at home, Edwards said: “It feels great to be back. Really proud. Really proud. I said that to the staff and the players.”
“I’m not going to lie, it’s been a goal of mine since I got the U18s job. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”
Edwards received a huge backlash for his decision from Boro fans, who feel let down, but he claims he has avoided watching the reaction to his move.
“I didn’t see a reaction, but I was aware of it because some people told me,” he said.
“I don’t read anything about myself, I don’t listen to anything. I’m personally not aware of it. I never want to know. That’s just me.”
“I know I’ve had a great job at Middlesbrough. Great people and very good players who have done well. So I’m aware of it. But this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long, long time.”
“I didn’t know if this opportunity would come again to become head coach of this club. I didn’t want to look back in 10, 15, 20 years when I had turned down the opportunity to coach Wolves in the Premier League. That’s it. I didn’t want to regret it and here I am.”
“I know the magnitude of the task and I’m very excited about it. This week has been a lot of fun. But now the games start, so let’s see.”
