With Gboard you can finally adjust the font size to your liking

We don’t think about it much, but having a good keyboard on your phone or tablet is an essential part of the Android experience. Without good typing, interactions would become an absolute nightmare. And while there are some great options out there, Gboard is the one that many people stick with because it offers one of the best typing experiences out there.

While Google could just leave it as is, it has added a number of updates over the years to improve the user experience. One small update that had a pretty big impact was the ability to adjust the keyboard font size independently of the phone’s settings. And while its release was limited just a month ago, we’re finally seeing it roll out more widely with Gboard’s latest release on the Google Play Store (via 9to5Google).

Independent adjustments for everyone

If you don’t really know what’s going on here, the font setting for your phone used to be tied to most parts of the device. So whatever changes you make in the settings menu, the same setting will be applied to your keyboard too. For most people this isn’t really a big deal, but if you’re someone who likes to really customize things, it did cause some issues.

For example, if you are someone who wants to set the font on the keyboard to something minuscule or extra large, this will apply to all parts of the phone, which can leave a visual clutter. With this new change you can go to the Institutions menu for Gboard, dive into the Preferences section and navigate to the Font size to make the necessary changes.

You can use the slider to change the keyboard font size as desired. As previously reported, the font size can be adjusted in 15% increments, starting at 85% and continuing up to the 130% mark. Then the slider jumps from 150% to 180% and finally to 200%.

Just as a heads up, the emoji key won’t change when the adjustments are made, but everything else will. And just like what we saw in the beta, there’s no preview of the font size changes. So you’ll just have to try it and see if you like it or not. If you’ve never tried Gboard, now is a good time.
