With daughter in tow, Zverev takes victory over Acapulco in first action since AO

In his first competitive action since his epic Australian Open semi-final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev made a sharp start to his Abierto Mexicano Telcel, presented by HSBC, in Acapulco on Tuesday evening.

Seeking to repeat his 2021 ATP 500 title triumph, Zverev dominated in a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Corentin Moutet. The top-seeded German did not allow a break point and recorded an equal score of 79 percent on the first serve-in and first-serve points won, according to Infosys ATP Stats.

“Corentin can be a difficult opponent, especially if, like me, you haven’t played matches for a while,” Zverev said of the Frenchman, who was looking for his 100th victory at tour level. “So definitely happy with the performance and looking forward to what lies ahead.”

With his 15th victory in Acapulco, Zverev (15-5) moved into a tie with Rafael Nadal (15-2) for the most wins at the event since it switched to hard courts in 2014. He also passed David Ferrer for the second-most ATP 500 wins since the series began in 2009, with his 117 wins (117-49) behind only Nadal’s 121. (121-19).

Zverev continued to enjoy his latest victory because his daughter Mayla is with him in Acapulco, adding a lightness to his experience: “This year I want to enjoy tennis a little more,” he explained. “I’m getting older, I know it won’t last forever. I hope it will last at least another ten years for me. But it’s also about enjoying it, and I’m definitely going to do that this week.”
