Brocco, who also won the 1994 Santa Anita Derby (G1), was Winick’s highest-earning horse, with career earnings of $1,003,550. He finished fourth in the 1984 Kentucky Derby (G1), behind Go for Gin.
Dontstop Themusic came to the plate in 34 of her 43 career starts for Winick, earning $963,469. She highlighted Winick’s most successful year in 1985, with victories in the Vanity Handicap (G1), Spinster Stakes (G1) and Chula Vista Handicap (G3). She finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) that year.
Winick’s career lasted from 1974-2005, according to Equibase, with his best year coming in 1985, when he posted earnings of $1,280,486. He won a total of 340 races from 2,346 career starts and earned $10,281,712. Towards the end of his career he served as a steward for the California Horse Racing Board.
He is survived by his daughter, Tierney Rae Winick, and sister Stacey Winick, according to an obituary from Landmark Funeral Home. The services will be private.
