Flames are in no rush to trade Blake Coleman

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman joined Pat Steinberg, Wes Gilbertson and Logan Gordon on Sportsnet 690 The FanFlames Talk continues after the Rasmus Andersson trade. Friedman was asked if activity around Blake Coleman will increase near the deadline and if it could be moved next?

Host: “Yeah, and lastly for you, you mentioned Coleman? I know he’s hurt right now. I don’t know exactly when he’ll come back from IR with the upper body injury he’s dealing with. But will that be a guy you expect, we’ve heard all kinds of buzz around him. How much more does that increase as we get closer to the Olympic break and then towards the deadline?”

NHL Rumors: 20 teams have inquired about Blake Coleman

Elliotte Friedman: “Well, I think that will improve. The only thing about it is that Coleman has indicated he would prefer to stay. And I think Calgary understands that, but I think they will do what they think is best for their group. He has a lot of say. I think he can only be traded to ten teams. I’m not sure how flexible he is on that, if at all.”

For example, I had a lot of rumors about Coleman at Montreal. One of the things someone told me was that they weren’t sure if he was, that he should be endorsing a team. And I don’t think everyone was sure he was willing to do that. As some guys say, the list is the list, and that’s the way it is, right? So I’m not sure Montreal will be a potential destination for him.

For example, the thing about Andersson is that the Flames had to make a decision. They weren’t going to renew him with what he wanted. They continued. So they had to do this sooner or later. And this is a guy who plays a lot.

NHL Rumors: What do the Calgary Flames want for Blake Coleman and Rasmus Andersson

I think they were concerned about the risk of injury to some of the other players here. They don’t have to do anything now, and suddenly the Flames could have Vegas’s next three first-rounders, right?

So I mean, like they have pieces that they can continue to rebuild with. We’ll see where this year goes. But this year, they will once again have a potentially high first-round pick. We’ll see. I mean, Andersson is a big loss on that blue line. Played great this season. I think this is the one that needed to be done the quickest. And now we will see.”
