The Maple Leafs need the Devils to keep money on Dougie Hamilton, and trading Ondrej Palat isn’t easy

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic: New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton has two years left on his $9 million cap hit contract. There is some hope that a trade can be found before the Olympic trading freeze on February 4.

The Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs could be possible candidates. The Leafs were looking for a right-handed defenseman with Chris Tanev out. The Leafs would need the Devils to maintain their payroll.

The Devils are also looking to trade For Ondrej Palat, who carries a $6 million cap hit for one more season. Palat has a 10-team trade list, so it’s not an easy deal to make.

NHL Rumors: The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking for D

Will they become “own rentals” or will they be moved even though their teams are still in the playoff race?

Daily Faceoff’s Matt Larkin: There are numerous teams still in the playoff hunt who have pending UFAs that they may have to keep and use as a “rental” and potentially lose for nothing. Some ongoing UFAs that could be moved.

Charlie Coyle – C – Columbus Blue Jackets – Has a $5.25 million cap hit, but is having a good season and has a lot of playoff experience.

Mario Ferraro – D – San Jose Sharks – He is a mid to bottom pair guy. They’re still rebuilding, but he’s the leader of the team and they’re still on the hunt.

Radko Gudas – D – Anaheim Ducks – He is 36 years old and the Ducks were on a downward spiral. If the freefall continues, they might consider it.

Boone Jenner – C – Columbus Blue Jackets – Can be a second-line center and should be able to get a good return considering everything he brings.

Scott Laughton – C – Toronto Maple Leafs – Looks like the player of old after the Leafs paid a big price for him at the deadline last year. If the Leafs fall out, teams could come calling, along with winger Bobby McMann.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau – C – New York Islanders – The Islanders have played better than many expected and they may not be able to move him as they may have initially thought. Pageau and Anders Lee look like they own rental properties.

Artemi Panarin – LW – New York Rangers – Could give the Rangers a scoop, a top prospect and perhaps a young player. There is still time for the Rangers to get back into the race. They have the players.

Nick Schmaltz – RW – Utah Mammoth – The sides are nowhere near an extension. The Mammoth is there, so acting is not an easy decision.

Alex Tuch – RW – Buffalo Sabers – Huge decision. The Sabers are in the playoffs and have missed fourteen straight seasons. He is looking for a big contract, but the return could also be huge.

NHL Rumors: What’s next for the Calgary Flames?

Jacob Trouba – D – Anaheim Ducks – Would get a bigger return than teammate Gudas. Has a 12-team no-trade list, but sounds like he had a good time in Anaheim and could consider re-signing.
