A press conference between US President Donald Trump and the Ukrainian President VolodyMyr Zenskyy started on Saturday in an apparently friendly way (AEDT).
Trump started praising the courage of Ukrainian soldiers and to say that it was an honor to organize Zenskyy in the White House .

Under the deal, the US would acquire large parts of Ukrainian rare earths, of which Trump said it would help end the war in Ukraine.

The negotiations between the leaders seemed to be progressing well, when the meeting escalated in a heated argument with increased voices and interruptions.
Trump and American vice -president JD Vance suggested that Zensky’s approach to the deal hinded peace efforts, while Zenskyy defended the position of Ukraine, with the emphasis on the past failed similarities with Russia and the need for the US security guarantees.

Professor Peter Dean of the US Studies Center of Sydney University said that diplomatic discussions such as these usually take place behind closed doors.

“We are not used to seeing diplomacy. We are not used to seeing this kind of debate and indeed arguing,” he told SBS News.

“You never look at how the ‘sausage is made’ because it is not very attractive and not very nice.
“Mr. Trump is president, he likes to do this on the public stage and on the world stage. And that is exactly what we recently saw at the meeting.”

Videos of the fiery exchange are widely spread on social media, of which clinical psychologist Danielle Epstein said that viewers can cause a strong emotional reaction.

‘Makes our emotions stronger’

“For everyone, when we see something that is alarming or surprising, it makes our emotions stronger. It switches us over,” the researcher and deputy -fellow at Sydney’s Macquarie told SBS News.
“We really focus on what we are looking at and we are pretty uncomfortable if it is something that is important to us.”

For people affected by the war in Ukraine, or with personal connections with the region, this form of content can be particularly painful.

Epstein explained that the distribution of social media of this content can also strengthen the need of a person, because often the most dramatic aspects are emphasized without an extra context.

“Social media content and these fragments of news, it is almost as if it is designed behind the scenes to attract our attention,” she said.

Different personality types

People respond differently when they are exposed to unusual content online and can be susceptible to different answers.
Epstein said that some people are naturally more susceptible to catastrophy or worry when they see something disturbing.
“If you are worried, it is very easy to really think about it and always want to talk about it with people,” she said.
“Especially if it is an emotionally charged subject.”

Others can be more used to dealing with uncertainty and following a more “cynical” approach.

“Some people are just more cynical and they realize and recognize what is going on, and they don’t give it so much meaning, and they are prepared to wait and see what is happening,” she said.
“They see that incident as an alarming incident that is designed to attract everyone’s attention, but they do not necessarily see it as an end of the world.”
Epstein said that a good way to process disturbing content is to talk about it with others, but to prevent it.
“Talking about things is healthy and a quick conversation about how amazing it was is a healthy way to just unpack it,” she said.

“But just don’t try to go too much depth or to be looking too long to solve the problems of the world there on every occasion, because that is not so healthy for us.”

Unplanned outburst or orchestrated negotiations

The work on a mineral deal between Ukraine and the US seems to have stalled, but Dean believes that the fiery exchange can all be part of Trump’s negotiating tactics.
“It seemed very orchestrated in the White House recently, intentionally designed to provoke President Zensky. And unfortunately he took their bait,” said Dean.
“And I think this is part of a wide set of negotiating tactics that puts the US into position. They talk very bone, very openly and very publicly.

“As President Trump said at the end, this will ensure great television.”

Dean explained that Trump would have had a goal to enter the meeting with Zenskyy, because his administration wants to look economical when it comes to financial help to Ukraine.
“They do it for two political constituencies, who not only send messages to the European Union and the Europeans about their safety,” he said.
“They send messages to the Maga (Make America Great Again) Support Base at home.”

The minerals deal, which would be signed this week, remains in the air.

Will the minerals deal take place?

But Dean said that Trump would want the deal to continue.
“It is clear that Trump wants a critical minerals deal. He sees that as essential for the United States,” he said.
“China is the largest supplier of critical minerals in the world, and that is a liability that the United States and other countries want to move from.

“I think Donald Trump understands that he will have to offer some sort of security insurance, but he wants things to do with the American backstopping instead of leading these things.”

While the war continues and peace talks continue.
Only this week world leaders in London met to discuss their own peace plan to present to the US, but the constant role of Trump in the region as a peacemakoek has been questioned according to Dean.

“For many European leaders, their question will be how much you can trust President Trump’s word [security in Ukraine]. “
