In the opening round of the Tour Championship 2025, the world’s best players – Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy – saw it out in the same combination. While their rounds were full of high moments, the highlight was an incredible break that McIlroy received on the 18th hole.
But despite the fact that Rory was his primary competition for the Fedex Cup this week, Scheffler was surprisingly more than happy when McIlroy’s quirky shot went from disaster to Birdie, thanks to some help from a grandstand to East Lake.
McIlroy’s Tribune Break at Tour Championship
Scheffler and McIlroy, Nos. 1 and 2 in Fedex Cup classification, turn together to open the Tour Championship on Thursday. And both stars played well on day 1.
McIlroy had a steady start and then broke out with an eagle on the PAR-5 6th, followed by a Birdie on the 7th. Scheffler had a much faster start of his tournament and made Birdies on 2 and 3 to get into red songs quickly.

In contrast to McIlroy, Scheffler was able to keep Bogeys off his score card all day and to arrive at the 18th hole at six o’clock. At that time, McIlroy had recorded two Bogeys and two Birdies on the rear nine, so he was put down to three.
When they walked 18 to go to the scoring tent, they each made Birdie at the age of 18 to push their scores lower. But McIlroy’s path to Birdie-4 was a rocky one.
After a ride to the left rough, McIlroy de Green tried to reach in two, but he was short of the front Greenside bunker. From there he was left with a long bunterschot that required a full swing.
Unfortunately for McIlroy he lay the shot and launched his ball well over the green and high in a grandstand behind the well surface.
But the golf gods stood by his side.
McIlroy’s shot with blades has nailed a hard, flat surface in the stands and then finished back on the green, miraculously in just 17 feet of the hole. He turned it for a memorable bird that brought him to four for the tournament.

In the opening round of the Tour Championship, three-time Fedex Cup champion Rory Mcilroy gets lucky women from the stands on the Par-5 18th Hole to make Birdie.
Why Scheffler was happy with Rory’s Big Break
If you see McIlroy’s ball sailing in the stands at 18 years, you would think that Scheffler would carrot for a disaster. After all, he fights McIlroy for the FedEx Cup title and the $ 10 million bonus this week.
But you would have thought wrong.
Instead, the world No. 1 was actually rooted for McIlroy to get a good break. This is why.
Starting with their rounds at 2 p.m., our star duo would never have a problem that did not end because of daylight.
But it was predicted that thunderstorms would roll through the race towards the end of their rounds. And that played a primary role in Scheffler’s thinking.

After he had been safely picked up on the Green on their last hole of the day, the last thing Scheffler wanted McIlroy was to end up in a difficult control situation. With the storms that pick and play to be called, any extra delay would force the pair to return on Friday morning to finish their last putts from the round.
And that is why Scheffler suddenly became a Rory McIlroy fan fan fan in the last moments of round 1 on the Tour Championship.
‘I’ve never rooted so hard for someone’s ball to come back [from the grandstand]Apart from my partner in a team event, “Scheffler explained on Thursday evening.” Because we walk to 18 and to 18 [NBC/Golf Channel reporter Jim “Bones” Mackay] told us they would blow [the horn] On every second, so I see his ball flying to the stands. I am so of, oh, my God, we have no way to finish this thing.
He continued smiling: “So I was relieved when I saw it coming back on the Green.”
Scheffler had also left his approach shot on 18 in a bunker. But the world No. 1 did not find the problem that the world no. 2 escaped it. Scheffler put his bunker shot on four feet and then made the putt for Birdie.
With a 4 by the latter, Scheffler finished a seven-under 63 who left him two shots Early leader Russell Henley.
