It’s not surprising that a large commercial truck, like an Amazon van, makes some kind of noise when it’s in reverse. Amazon’s commitment to safety is evident in its use of a monitoring system in the van that monitors everything from seat belt use to speed. Granted, there have been some challenges, such as when Amazon drivers were told to turn off safety monitoring to meet quotas. But in recent years, the company’s safety awareness has expanded in unique ways.
In the past, Amazon trucks relied on the familiar beeping sound often heard on forklifts, dump trucks and other large equipment to alert pedestrians when the truck was backing up. Today the company uses reversing alarms that emit a form of white noise. You can even get one Reversing alarm with white noise yourself for $28.99, if you will.
In a video explaining the reverse beepers: Technology connections says it is easier and faster for human brains to determine the location of white noise alarms than a monotonous beeping alarm. Faster recognition of a truck reversing nearby helps prevent accidents.
Another benefit of white noise backup alarms
Daily traffic noise causes more damage to our well-being than many would suspect. OSHAthe Occupational Safety and Health Administration, requires commercial vehicles with an obstructed rear view to have a backup signal that is “distinguishable from the ambient noise level” and “audible above the ambient noise level.” That is, unless the truck has a spotter who guides the driver back when it is safe.
The white noise backup alarms used on Amazon trucks will not only help us avoid being hit by a van, but “will also likely comply with environmental regulations and reduce noise complaints,” according to HTS spare partsa supplier of spare parts for construction equipment in Britain The usual louder beeping reversing alarms are becoming less effective as more people get used to hearing them.
While the newer backup alarms on Amazon trucks may be annoying, they are safer and help reduce noise pollution. Just like any other new thing, it won’t take long for people to get used to it.
