Which car company should follow Michelin’s example and create its own Fancy Award? – Jalopnik

If you don’t know, Michelin, the tire company, and Michelin, the fancy restaurant winner, are the same company. That means Boston and Philadelphia just paid a tire company an undisclosed amount to visit each city and decide if any of the restaurants are any good. And according to that tire company, the next time you visit Philadelphia, you have to eat Her Place Supper Club, Friday Saturday Sunday and origin. Meanwhile, if you’re in Boston, you’ve already given up on finding good food the best restaurant in town is officially Three 1 One.

Having lived in Boston for several years before moving to LA, I’m honestly still a little shocked that Michelin deemed one restaurant good enough to deserve a star, but in my defense, Three 1 One opened after I left. As for why a tire manufacturer would give out prestigious dinner awards, that actually makes a little more sense when you look at the history of the Michelin awards. In the early days of the automobile, Michelin actually needed people to drive more if it wanted to increase tire sales. So it put together its own road trip guides to convince people of the idea of driving to different cities.

Honestly, not a bad idea. Personally, I’m more of a James Beard Award type myself, but I won’t pretend that the meals I’ve had at Michelin-starred restaurants haven’t been absolutely incredible.

Why let Michelin have all the fun?

At this point I think it’s safe to say that Michelin covers the entire restaurant side. Cities (well, mostly it seems to be tourism boards) are so eager to see their restaurants earn Michelin’s official stamp of approval that they’re willing to pay Michelin to rate their restaurants. It’s not cheap either, with current estimates ranging from $500,000 on the low end to potentially over $1 million. So I don’t think other car companies will adopt Michelin restaurant ratings anytime soon.

But who says car companies shouldn’t come up with their own seemingly unrelated prices anyway? It’s already a proven formula, which means we just need to find the right angle here. You may not think “lawyer” when you think “electric vehicle,” but personally I think it’s time for Tesla to start reviewing the best divorce lawyers in each city. Why stop there anyway when it can also rate the best personal injury lawyers in each city? Oh well, they should probably just go ahead and get lawyers involved too. What can I say? At this point it just fits the brand.

However, that can’t be the only prestigious car company award we’re missing. I bet you have plenty of suggestions, so let us know in the comments. If one of our ideas is good enough, maybe a marketing department will turn it into an actual prize. And before you doubt me, remember that a Jalopnik QOTD already inspired its own Jeep commercial. Anything can happen, folks.
