Alysa Liu is back at the Olympics on her own terms, and she’s doing well on the U.S. team.
Four years ago, Liu attended the COVID-affected Beijing Olympics as a 16-year-old who despised how skating and endless hours of practice had taken over her life. A two year break, a new perspective and a world title later it’s all new again.
Friday’s skate in the short program wasn’t quite up to her World Cup level, and Liu grimaced at a wobbly landing as she finished second behind three-time world champion Kaori Sakamoto of Japan. Still, the American team remained in the lead with three of eight programs completed. Watch her first skate below.
