The 90s were perhaps the best decade for cars, full stop. I can say this without the rose-colored glass nostalgia, because I was hardly aware of the 90s of a modern point of view, looking at the tuner groots of that time, they remain some of the best cars on the roads today. But if the 1990s were the best decade for cars, what is the best car of that decade?
Today we try to answer that question – or rather, we try to answer you with it. I have all my choice: the FD Mazda RX-7. It was close to this, the R34 Skyline GT-R and the Subaru Impreza WRX STI 22B, but the Mazda only wins on style. The FD is one of the most beautiful cars ever written by human hands, above it with the Toyota 2000GT and the Datsun Z, and I think it makes the best car of the 90s.
More than just the appearance
Of course there is more to the FD than just a nice scale. There is the 13b rotating under the hood and the turbo that feeds it, which gives us the unmistakable sound of a streety of a street gate. It is the sound of a good time, and a sound that no piston engine will give you. Add the power numbers that people regularly seem to get from these engines, and the FD really deserves its place at the top. Just don’t ask to stay there for a long time before you fall apart.
My favorite car of the 90s is the FD RX-7, but what is yours? Leave your answers in the comments below and we collect your choices later this week. Bonus points for stories about the cars you love, real justifications why they are better than the FD. Good luck that I sell about that.
