It’s been almost a year since I first leased my Fiat 500e, which means I’ll probably need an update soon, but part of the reason I haven’t written more about my experiences with the car is because ownership has been pretty quiet. It may be a short-range electric vehicle built by Stellantis in Italy, but somehow it wasn’t the rolling disaster you probably expected. It has never stranded me, the only problems I have had with charging are the fault of the chargers, and it always starts and drives every time I try to turn it on.
Even when I took the 500e on a 760-mile road trip, it performed better than expected. Of course, I had to stop to charge more often than I would have had I been driving a car with a longer range, but it was more comfortable than I expected after a full day of driving, and it didn’t catch fire, which is always appreciated when driving an Italian car. And while more range would have made that one road trip faster, I don’t think I’d be willing to pay more for a bigger battery since I so rarely need more range than it already provides. Even in a rural area.
Is this the most exciting daily driver a motoring journalist can drive? No, but it does the job well, looks cute and is cheap to run, while I could save more money to put into my girlfriend’s Mustang. I guess the 1964.5 models are special or something? Either way, it’s a much more exciting car than anything else I could reasonably buy.
I still have complaints
Sure, we’re talking about a city car that’s designed to be one of the cheapest EVs in the US, and better sun visors would probably just drive up the cost, but when (or if) Fiat redesigns the 500e, I really hope the visors get fixed anyway. Even with sunglasses on, not being able to block out the sun is incredibly annoying, especially since we’re not talking about a lightweight performance car like a Lotus or a Miata. Maybe other owners don’t mind so much, but I want to make it clear and say that I do.
What about you though? Is there something about your car that you hope will be fixed at the next redesign? It could just be something that irritates you, such as a sun visor or an awkwardly shaped storage compartment, but I also take into account more serious complaints. Whatever it is, be sure to tell us in the comments.
