West Brom boss Ryan Mason has done that confirmed Toby Collyer will miss the midweek match against Watford due to a hamstring injury.

Fresh off a weekend win Preston North End and West Brom make the quick turnaround to take on Javi Gracia’s Watford on Wednesday evening.

WBA defeated North End 2-1 on Saturday. It was a result to celebrate for the Baggies given how Paul Heckingbottom’s side impressed early on, with Mikey Johnston and Isaac Price on the scoresheet.

However, it wasn’t all good for Ryan Mason and co. Making his second start for the club, summer loan signing Toby Collyer had to withdraw shortly in the second half due to injury.

His withdrawal has caused understandable concern among fans, and West Brom head coach Mason has now released an update on the matter. Speaking to the assembled press – as relayed by the Express and star – Mason confirmed Collyer has suffered a hamstring injury.

It is something he has had to deal with before at parent club Manchester United.

Scans have shown signs of damage but WBA boss Mason was cautious not to put a timetable on his return. It remains to be seen if further details emerge later in the week, but Collyer will not be involved against Watford.

Fingers crossed over Toby Collyer’s injury concerns

The injury comes at a frustrating time for Collyer, who joined West Brom in search of more senior playing time.

After taking time to settle down and get up to speed with seven consecutive appearances from the bench, the Manchester United loanee appeared to have found a place in the starting XI. He played almost 80 minutes against Millwall in his first start and retained his place for the Preston North End game.

Collyer also provided an assist against PNE, making a good shift in midfield before being forced off.

It would be a real blow to him if he were sidelined for an extended period of time just as he was starting to build up some steam. From a team perspective, Mason will be hoping he doesn’t end up stuck in midfield either.

Who will be in the starting XI for West Brom?

While losing Collyer isn’t ideal, West Brom do have plenty of cover in the middle.

Alex Mowatt’s importance has been highlighted by his form this season and he will keep his place. For the place next to him in Collyer’s absence, Jayson Molumby and Ousmane Diakite will compete.

Both players have found starting opportunities under Mason. It will be intriguing to see who can claim the place as their own.

Molumby will cover ground as a hard-working presence, while Diakite may be more assured defensively. Both would allow Mowatt to use his technical and creative attributes effectively.
