Watts and Chuli lead Scepters to 3-1 win over Charge – The Hockey Writers PWHL Latest News, Analysis and More

The Toronto Scepters hosted the Ottawa Charge on Thursday evening (December 4) at the Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto, Ontario. This was the first match of the season between these two county rivals as they were both looking for victory number two of the young season.

The Scepters entered with a 1-1-0-0 record and finished in fifth place in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL).

The Charge started this one at 1-2-0-0, sitting alone in seventh place in the PWHL.

Summary of the game

The road crew struck first Fanuza Kadirova came rushing in and blew one past the Sceptres goalkeeper Elaine Chuli for her first PWHL goal. That goal came just 1:45 into the game and was the lone marker of the period as Charge took a 1-0 lead into the intermission. Despite trailing, Toronto had a big lead on the shot clock at 18-4.

The Sceptres’ relentless attack paid off in the second then Daryl Watts ripped a blocker side past Gwyneth Philips to tie things up on the power play. And later in the period, Natalie Spooner redirected a slick feed from Watts for her first of the season and the lead. They took that 2-1 lead into the second intermission, with the shots in their favor at 27-11.

In the third period, the Scepters protected their lead on their way to victory. The Charge pulled their goalkeeper with just under two minutes remaining, but captain Blayre Turnbull buried one in the open goal to seal the ball. The final score was 3-1, with the score 37-17 in their favor.

Watts led the way on offense as she had a goal and an assist in this one. Meanwhile, Chuli stopped 16 shots in a row to record her first win as a member of the Scepters. Philips was also solid at the other end, stopping 34 of 37.

Ottawa’s next game comes in a few weeks when they visit the Vancouver Goldeneyes at the Pacific Coliseum on Tuesday night (December 16). Puck drop is scheduled for 8:00 PM MDT.

Toronto’s next game will be early on Sunday (December 7) as they visit the Montreal Victoire at Place Bell. Puck drop is at 10am MDT.
