Geely to rebadge Proton AMA models for select markets – modular platform has more than 50 markets in mind – paultan.org

You read the headline correctly. Proton vehicle program director Desmond John Pinto revealed during a question and answer session at yesterday’s Proton Tech Showcase launch that Proton models based on the Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA) will be rebadged by Geely for sale in select markets.

This is because Geely does not have smaller, more compact and affordable models than the ones Proton currently sells (X/S series), he explained. The AMA platform is a redesigned version of the previous Sagas, whose origins go back some 20 years. The recently launched Saga MC3 is the first model to arrive on this platform (AMA01), and in the future there will be AMA02, AMA05 and AMA06 models – “new generation of affordable and practical global cars” that will replace the PIES models (Persona, Iriz, Exora and old Saga).

AMA has been redesigned to be modular: according to Pinto’s presentation, the wheelbase can be extended up to 290 mm and the track width increased by up to 43 mm. The Saga’s wheelbase is 2,465 mm (since 2008). Assuming there are no smaller models than the Saga, that means AMA has the potential to accommodate a 2,755mm wheelbase – longer than the Exora’s 2,730, the Civic’s 2,735 and even the eMas 7’s 2,750!

The platform has also been designed with the global market in mind, with simultaneous development for left-hand drive (LHD) and right-hand drive (RHD) for more than 50 markets in ASEAN, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East, plus Latin and South America.

AMA models not only aim for a five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating in the 2026-2030 protocol; their structural designs also take Euro NCAP into account. And – here’s something to make Proton fans happy – we’re told AMA models will retain Proton’s ride and handling.

Powertrains? In addition to the new Saga’s 1.5 liter i-GT four-cylinder engine with port injection, the Aisin four-speed gearbox and the Punch CVT, there will be hybrids that combine the engine with special hybrid transmissions. Excited?
