Most Valuable Promotions, Jake Paul’s promotional company that signed Johnson last year, is explicitly marketing her around this duality and positioning her as someone who is equally comfortable discussing championship-level boxing and fashion-forward weigh-ins.
The response from the boxing community was predictably along familiar lines. Some viewers engaged with the moment as part of modern martial arts culture, where weigh-in theater has both promotional and personal expression functions. Others wondered whether such choices detract from the legitimacy of women’s boxing as a sport.
The boxing rules allow committee-approved clothing at weigh-ins, leaving room for individual interpretation. Johnson made weight without controversy and will defend all of her titles, the IBF, WBC and WBO bantamweight titles, against Galle tomorrow night from the Kaseya Center in Miami. Galle, an undefeated Canadian challenger who sits at 12-0-1, represents a legitimate test for the champion. Johnson goes in as a -1000 betting favorite given her 44% knockout percentage to Galle’s 8%.
The Netflix event “Judgment Day” kicks off Friday, December 19 from the Kaseya Center in Miami with a preliminary card starting at 4:45 PM ET, featuring four women’s championship fights before the main event. In addition to Johnson’s undisputed defense of the bantamweight title against Amanda Galle, viewers will see Alycia Baumgardner defend her super featherweight title against Leila Beaudoin, Caroline Dubois challenge for the WBC lightweight title against Camila Panatta, and Yokasta Valle put her WBC strawweight title on the line against Yadira Bustillos.
The main card opens at 8:00 PM ET with Anderson Silva vs. Tyron Woodley at cruiserweight before Anthony Joshua takes on Jake Paul at heavyweight at approximately 10:30 PM ET.
