John Carlson and the Washington Capitals are discussing a contract during the Olympic break
Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period now joined NHL with Adan Virk and Michael Del Zotto and was asked about John Carlson and his potential to expand with the Washington Capitals after this season.

Adnan Virk: “It’s a pleasure to be with Dave Pagnotta right now. He always does a great job when it comes to things that are happening in the rumor mill. John Carlson, right now, Dave, in the final year of his contract. He plans to continue playing beyond this season. What are the chances that the Capitals sign this guy, who has been so valuable to them, to an extension this year?”
Dave Pagnotta: “Yes. Well, Adan, he plans to play. This is his last year of an eight-year contract; eight times eight, he expects, and expects to play again after this season. He has already surpassed his goal total from last year this season and he is almost to the point of playing. He is still contributing at a high level and he wants to continue.”
They haven’t discussed the contract extension yet, but my understanding is that it’s on the agenda later in the season, perhaps during the Olympic Break, to give the Capitals time to talk to his agent to see what kind of deal they might be looking at.

Now that the Caps have a lot of cap space next season and beyond, they want to figure out how to use that money, monetize the roster, so to speak. And they will have those conversations in due course, I’m told the negotiations don’t have to be difficult at all. He is expected to play next season. He hopes and wants it to happen with the Caps. The Caps want to keep him around. This should be a marriage that goes beyond this season.”
NHL Rumors.com Note: The 2026 free agent class isn’t very attractive with all the high-priced talent coming off the board. Artemi Panarin and Alex Tuch could be the top dogs this year. The expectation is that John Carlson will be made capital of Washington for life.
