You probably know the anniversary GTI models, which usually involve increasing power and improving handling. And that’s no different for the new Edition 50, which boosts the Mk8.5 GTI to 325 hp and 310 Nm, making it the most powerful production GTI ever. Not only that, but the Edition 50 laps the Nürburgring a whopping six seconds faster than the mighty 2016 Clubsport S, all while dragging around three extra seats. It’s fair to say Sam was impressed, and you can read his review of the Edition 50 here, although there are some behind-the-scenes insights you’ll only get from listening to the pod.
Next, we’ll go through our recent article on the best used sports cars you can buy in 2026. The aim here is to cover as many price points as possible, with the cheapest option being this Lotus Esprit at £28,750. Sure, you might be able to find something more supercar-like for less if you look hard, but if you do, you’ll be entering Brave Pill territory. Things get a lot wilder from there, with a Dodge Viper, Audi R8 V10 Spider and McLaren 650S all getting going. We won’t give away the full breakdown, but you can read about each car and click on the listings via the link here.
Wrapping up is our usual shopping challenge, only this week we have a seriously healthy budget to play with. PHer Zero7 has around £85,000 to spend on a weekend car alongside their FL5 Honda Civic Type R, and would like to find something that delivers a ‘gut experience’. Sam has gone for this Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder, which may be a little on the predictable side, but at £84,995 it hits the nail on the head. My pick goes to this McLaren GT (which has since hopefully been sold to Zero7) for £82,995, which is not only more practical than the Boxster, but also has more cylinders and more power, while being £2,000 cheaper. You can submit your own suggestions in the topic here, but at the risk of sounding like a broken record, listen to the podcast first…
