Volvo has a lot to thank for a successful launch of its upcoming electric mid-size crossover EX60. The Swedish automaker has been gradually releasing updates, previously sharing its expected maximum range, and today’s news concerns the EX60’s advanced technology suite, specifically the integration of Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence program. The EX60 will be the first Volvo to launch with Gemini, which is intended to make interacting with the vehicle a more human experience. This includes voice commands and ongoing updates that will integrate Gemini more deeply with the car’s systems, ultimately “using the EX60’s cameras to see what you see and answer questions about the world around you.”

Volvo is also touting the safety benefits of its improved AI voice assistant capabilities, saying: “Gemini makes every journey more useful by providing hands-free control over everything that matters on the road. Drivers can stay focused on the journey, reducing the need to look at the central display.” The Volvo EX60 hasn’t been officially unveiled yet, but this statement makes me wonder if it will have a similar layout to the EX30, without a dedicated gauge display behind the steering wheel. We’ll be at the EX60 launch next week on January 21, but until then details are scarce.

These improvements are made possible by HuginCore, NVIDIA and Qualcomm

The EX60’s comprehensive technology package is brought to you by several buzzwords, including HuginCore, Volvo’s core system “named after the bird in Norse mythology that allows the car to think, process and act,” as well as a Qualcomm Snapdragon Cockpit Platform, and NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin. These systems come together to enable the EX60 to perform more than 250 trillion operations per second, as well as the AI features and computing power that the EX60 will be capable of.

Volvo calls it ‘a car that learns with every kilometer’, allowing it to read and assess the world around it through a series of sensors thanks to the HuginCore. The system is designed to more quickly anticipate danger, avoid potential risks and give occupants a safer, less stressful journey, as well as enable advanced driver assistance systems. Naturally, the EX60 is capable of over-the-air updates for continuous improvements over the life of the vehicle, and can learn from other Volvo cars worldwide to continually improve safety.

Each car comes with a four-year free plan with unlimited data, so owners can take advantage of all these snazzy features. I’m wary of giving Google’s AI assistant access to a car’s cameras, but who knows, maybe luxury EV buyers don’t have that?
