Volkswagen won’t make new ID buzzes for the US in 2026, but could return in 2027

Electric vehicles have always been a tough sell in the US, given their range limitations, longer charging times and higher prices than traditional internal combustion cars. Since EV critic President Donald Trump and his Grand Old Party senators decided in September to end the $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles, automakers have opted to reevaluate the viability of their electrified vehicle offerings. Unfortunately, Volkswagen is one of those car manufacturers and has decided to stop production in the US market of its cheerful and charismatic electric ID Buzz before 2026.

The ID Buzz has faced an uphill sales battle since its introduction in late 2024, no doubt due to its $60,000 base price and low maximum driving range of 207 miles. I saw a real-world range of around 300 miles on a charge when I lived with the ID Buzz for a week, and I loved every second I spent in it, but it understandably struggled to find buyers. Dealers were first notified of the change, and our friends Carscopes discovered it on Reddit. We reached out to a Volkswagen spokesperson for comment on the matter, who sent us the dealer memo stating: “after careful assessment of current market conditions for electric vehicles, we have made the strategic decision not to move forward with MY26 ID Buzz.”

Only the Volkswagen Golf R sold fewer units in the third quarter

The ID Buzz hasn’t been the sales success Volkswagen hoped for, despite winning over most of the journalists who get behind the somewhat bus-like wheel. Volkswagen’s third-quarter sales reports show that only the specialized and expensive Golf R sold fewer units than the ID Buzz until the end of September. Volkswagen sold just 4,934 ID Buzzes in the first three quarters of 2025, accounting for just under 2% of the company’s total sales in the first through third quarters.

However, all hope for the model is not lost. The dealer memo said: “This approach allows us to more effectively focus our resources on current inventory and supporting retail performance through the remainder of 2025, creating a strong foundation as we prepare for the 2027 model year transition next year.”

I really hope this doesn’t spell the end for the retro-cool Volkswagen ID Buzz in the US, as they add some much-needed color and quirkiness to the relatively fairly homogenous array of other crossovers on sale today. Hopefully the 2027 model year will bring an improved and cheaper ID Buzz, and not more bad news.
