A student of class 12 was beaten by four of his classmates in their hostel room in the Junagadh of Gujarat, one day after a fight broke out during a Kabaddi match on July 26. The attack was recorded on video by one of the students, which was later distributed.
According to the complaint, all the boys involved were in the hostel. The victim, afraid after the incident, told the hostel authorities that he did not feel well and left with his father. His family claimed that school management was trying to hide the matter. Almost a month later, when the victim’s father learned the details, he approached the police and submitted the video as proof.
Police officer Hitesh Dhandhalia said that a case was registered under the Juvenile Justice Act against four students based on the complaint and the video, and the role of school management is also being investigated.
“On July 26, during the Kabaddi match, a few words were exchanged, after which the four students attacked the victim on July 27. Based on the video that went viral, a case was registered under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act,” the officer said.
The father of the boy, Vimal Choncha, said: “This is my son. I live in Upleta. Last month my son was hit by some boys in the hostel. I found out via Instagram. School management did not inform us and tried to hide it. When I went to meet them, they didn’t meet me or took my phone calls.”
The uncle of the victim, Ranabhai, added: “We only informed this incident two days ago. The school knew the next day, but immediately sent the boys who made him back home without informing us. If something had happened to our child, would the schools be responsible?
The case went up soon after a similar incident in Vadodara, where a student was killed by someone else with a knife, so that concern about the safety of children in schools was deepened.
