The American Davis Cup team lost two of his top cannons on the way to the second round of Davis Cup with the Czech Republic in Delray Beach, Florida.
It can lose a third.
After Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul were forced to withdraw from the team due to injuries at the US Open, Taylor Fritz was a no-show during the Draw ceremony of the event and the press conference before Event on Thursday due to “under the weather” according to the American Davis Cup captain Bob Bob Bob.
“Taylor Fritz feels a bit under the weather. He doesn’t feel great today,” Bryan said in an introductory statement at the start of the official press conference of the American team. “But he is dedicated to play tomorrow. He just needs some rest.”

Fritz, ranked no. 5 in the ATP Singles Rankings, was signed to play the second best-of-three set Singles match on Friday evening against the Czech number 2 player Jakub Mensik, after Frances Tiafoe who started the best-of-five match series against Czech Jiri Lhecka. If Fritz has the feeling that he is not good enough to play, he must be seen by the Davis Cup Independent Doctor on -site who should officially explain to him that is unable to compete. In that scenario, the United States would then be able to replace Fritz from the line-up and Reilly Opelka could compete in his place as the backup singles player of the American team.
This year, Fritz will be confronted with Mensik for the second time and will be a rematch of their semi-final on the Miami Open from March, won by Mensik 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (4). The victory for Mensik was part of his career height when winning the event and then defeated Novak Djokovic in the final. Mensik said he is looking forward to playing Fritz, because he likes how his game matches him. Mensik also said that the slower speed of the courts in the Delray Beach Tennis Center versus that will help neutralize the powerful Fritz -Serve and make it easier for him to make better contact with more service rates.
“Here is almost slower than Miami, so it becomes exciting to put the return here,” said Mensik. “I feel pretty confident because his game style is a kind of what I like.”
Tiafoe and Lehecka come from contrasting American open results from last week. Tiafoe was defeated in the third round for the Jan-Lennard-Dingen qualifying match, which dropped his ATP singles ranking to no. 29.
