The Independent Football Regulator (IFR) has announced plans to strengthen the owners, directors and senior executives in an attempt to prevent “Rogue owners” entering English football.
The more difficult rules will expand background controls to cover domestic and international affairs, bank data and data from law enforcement, thereby guaranteeing a stricter control of anyone who wants to take over control of a club.
Earlier this year, the legislators approved the bill of football management, whereby the road was cleared for the IFR to supervise financial and administrative standards in the English football pyramid.
“The new regime will assess the honesty, integrity and financial solidity of those who want to own or lead a football club so that they have the necessary skills and experience to do this,” the IFR said in a statement. “It will promote responsible ownership and protect the financial health of the 116 regulated football clubs, and is the first element of the new IFR regime that must be consulted.
“The rules that will determine whether potential owners, directors and senior executives are fit and appropriate have been considerably tightened, while the criteria used to protect against illegal financing and criminal financing that football enter have also been broadened.”
The proposals mark the first big step in the reforming of the English football board, whereby the IFR is expected to be monitored in the coming seasons.
