At 5,151mm long, 2,000mm wide and 1,805mm high, and with a wheelbase of 3,105mm, the BMW X7 is no small car, but you know how things are in super-sized America. This was stated by the chairman of the BMW National Dealer Forum, Kirk Cordill Automotive News in an interview that he believes dealers could benefit from something bigger to compete well with the likes of the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator and Infiniti QX80.

The Escalade is the bestseller in this segment – in elongated ESV form it is a whopping 615mm longer than BMW’s largest model, while having a 301mm longer wheelbase. It’s also wider (2,060mm) and taller (1,941mm) than the X7, while having more than double the luggage space with all seats up. The German car can carry 326 liters behind the third row; the Yank tank can swallow 722 liters (or 1,175 liters if you get the ESV model).

Let’s explore possible paths. Almost immediately after the birth of the X7 in 2018, there were already reports that BMW was considering an X8. We’ve even seen prototypes tested – but that ended up being the XM super SUV, which isn’t exactly what we’re looking for here.

What about an X9? Munich has trademarked the ‘iX9’ since 2017, but we haven’t heard a peep about such a vehicle since. However, Cordill believes BMW could use its Alpina brand for a new, larger SUV.
