A day after the Terriers recorded their first shutout of the season, they were shut out by tenacious UMass, who took advantage of a puck handling error by Mikhail Yegorov and then added an empty net target.

BU had numerical advantages in shots and face-off wins, but what was missing was the previous night’s crisp passing, puck recovery and O-zone cycling. Instead, there were too many pucks passed in skates, puck fumbles and 22 shots blocked by the Minutemen.
Although disappointed with the outcome, coach Jay Pandolfo said he “wasn’t disappointed with the effort. For the most part, the effort was there. On a weekend, it’s hard to win two hockey games when you only score one goal.
“I really like our first period. We were pushing pretty well,” he added, noting that UMass had only two scoring opportunities in the period, not counting the fluke. “I think we’ve gotten rid of it [our game] in the second. Give UMass a lot of credit in the third. They blocked everything. We just couldn’t generate enough offensively. We have to find a way to score goals.”
BU’s top scorer, Cole Hutsonwho had been injured at the Junior World Championships, was not in the line-up. He was replaced by freshmen Malte Vass.
Pandolfo explained: “It was just precautionary, like he’s doing well. I don’t think he still feels like he’s 100% of how he wants to feel. So at this point in the season it just wasn’t worth playing him tonight. He’ll be re-evaluated and we’ll see where it goes.”
The Terriers started the home game much like the night before with clean breakaways and puck possession in the offensive zone while breaking up UMass rushes. BU’s best scoring opportunity came on a two-on-one rush that hit Jonathan Morello only. He feinted once and went to his backhand, bI am empty Mike Hrabal close the door.
BU ran the first of three power plays midway through the period, collecting two shots on goal with several attempts blocked by UMass defenders.
Just as the power play was coming to an end, UMass cleared the puck down the length of the ice and behind the BU net. Of Gavin McCarthy And Owen McLaughlin

At the end of one BU, he had a 12-3 shot lead and had won 10 of 17 draws, but trailed 1-0. UMass had six blocks during that period.
A penalty kick with half a second left in the opening period gave BU the man advantage as the second period began. Hrabal defended two BU shots while Yegorov parried a short attempt.
After the power play ended, the momentum shifted to the Minutemen who thwarted entry into the BU zone, negating the Terriers’ forward efforts and creating scoring opportunities for themselves.
While the teams play 4 against 4, Jac Musa fired a shot past Yegorov to double the lead. BU challenged for goalkeeper interference as Bo Cozman had made contact with the goalkeeper’s glove. The challenge was accepted and the score remained 1-0.
A fine for that Jack Harvey was killed by the Terriers, but UMass continued to have the better of the game, resulting in a 10-5 lead in the second period.
UMass continued to limit BU’s O-zone time throughout the third period. At 7:13, Harvey worked his way to the slot for a shot that went off Hrabal’s shoulder. With just under two minutes to go, Yegorov was called for an extra attacker. BU’s best chance passed by Sacha Boisvert‘s redirection of Sascha Boumedienne‘ was shot from the point where Hrabal stopped. UMass continued to get bodies for shot attempts and at 7:07 p.m., Musa, a one-time BU recruit, scored from his own defensive zone into the empty net.
Although he faced just 17 shots and stopped 16, Yegorov came out on top with at least six saves to keep the margin at one over the final two periods.
Kamil Bednarik had a strong night at the face-off, winning 11 of 16 ties.

defkit’s terrier takeaway
– I was very impressed with the size of the audience as the students are still on break. The alumni band has done fantastic work for the students. Among the notables in attendance: Keith Tkachuk (perhaps scouting Tynan for the Blues?)
– Although I’m disappointed with the outcome, I still feel good about the direction the team is heading. The Terriers played well at their own game and with a few exceptions, did a good job getting the pucks and starting the breakaway. I did notice that UMass turned up the heat in the third period and it took a few shifts for BU to adjust to that. Considering Cole Hutson didn’t play, I thought McCarthy and Trethewey stepped up their game (Charlie made one blunder in the third, but Big Mike stopped the resulting breakaway opportunity).
– Offensively, the biggest takeaway from the weekend was the ability of the fourth line (Morello with Merrill and Roukunakis) to dominate possession. While they weren’t as dominant last night as they were on Friday, they were the line that most consistently kept the puck in the offensive zone.
– I have been following Tynan Lawrence closely and I agree with Pandolfo’s assessment: he is a very smart player who will adapt quickly. I think there was an improvement in his game even from Friday to Saturday evening. He skates well, has a very hard shot and plays a 60-yard game. While he won’t rack up points like Macklin or Eichel, he will certainly be a top scorer on the team and see ice time in all situations (i.e. a coach’s dream player).
– The rest of the offense is struggling. The shot totals weren’t terrible, but the sustained attacking opportunities were few and far between. Last night the team must have put 12 shots over the net, including some of their best scoring opportunities. I see Boisvert playing more confidently, so I think the points will come to him too. But Ritchie, Murtagh and Fondrk do not live up to expectations. Murtagh can at least play a physical game, but the other two need to get their games going. I’m more concerned about Ritchie, coming from the more offensive CHL (not to mention playing with McKenna), that he just doesn’t need the rest of the game in the NCAA and beyond.
– Goalies: Give credit to UMass’ “Really” Big Mike (Hrabal). Like our own Big Mike, he has had an up and down season, but he was the reason why UMass got the split and why Friday’s game was so close. As for Yegorov, I’m sure he’s kidding himself knowing that the only goal he gave up all weekend was with him behind his own net. The loss is not his at all as the team should be able to score 2 or 3 goals for him. But without that precious giveaway, this game probably would have gone to OT, which would have helped in the standings.
– It will be interesting to see who plays against Harvard on Monday. Does JP McNelis come on and does Fondrk or even Ritchie sit?
