UN peacekeeper injured in gunfire near ‘Blue Line’ in southern Lebanon

According to one note for correspondents Released by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the incident took place during a patrol of the UN interim force in Lebanon (UNIFILE) inspected a roadblock in the village of Bastarra in southern Lebanon.

In a separate incident on the same day, another UNIFIL patrol reported machine gun fire from south of the Blue Line in the immediate vicinity of its position near the village of Kfar Shouba.

“UNIFIL had informed the Israeli military in advance about the activities in those areas, following the usual practice for patrolling sensitive areas near the Blue Line,” Mr. Dujarric said.

He noted that incidents have also occurred in recent days in the mission’s area of ​​operations that restricted UNIFIL’s freedom of movement by local individuals.

“Any act that could endanger the safety and security of United Nations peacekeepers is completely unacceptable,” Dujarric said.

“We reiterate our call on all actors to cease activities that endanger the well-being of peacekeepers and interfere with their mandatory activities in support of the implementation of Security Councilresolution 1701”, he added.

The UN spokesperson further reminded the parties of their responsibility to ensure the safety and security of peacekeepers.
