Kyle Nelson anticipates an electric fight and an emphatic finish to his UFC Vancouver bout with Matt Frevola. This came up in a recent interview for MMA Canada. Nelson had an online post a few months ago about how the Canadians went undefeated the last time the UFC came to Vancouver, and he has a desire to keep that trend going on October 18th.
There are quite a few Canadian fighters on this card, with names like Jasmine Jasudavicius, Aiemann Zahabi, Charles Jourdain and Mike Malott. When talking about the proliferation of Canadian fighters bolstering this looming UFC Fight Night offering in British Columbia, Nelson said:
“I trained with Aiemann [Zahabi] just at Tristar. Obviously, as you said, I trained with Mike [Malott]I won’t know for another ten years or something. As if he were the; he came up with my head coach and then spent a long time in Alpha Male. So back then we only saw him occasionally, but now he’s back here full time.”
“Training with Jazz [Jasudavicius] also a little bit with Niagara Top Team and Kyle Prepolec, he’s coming out. So we have a good group of Canadian UFC guys all fighting on the same card and we can all train together. So I think everyone will be watching this extra closely.
UFC Vancouver gets a barnburner fight with Nelson vs. Frevola
Nelson’s opponent here, Matt Frevola, has had some huge fights on his resume and is looking to bounce back from some setbacks against Benoit Saint Denis and Fares Ziam. Frevola also has some wins over guys like Drew Dober, Luis Pena, Jalin Turner, and ‘The Steamrolla’ also fought Arman Tsarukyan.
When commenting on Matt Frevola’s resume and skills he brings to this, Nelson said:
“Yeah, I mean, he’s had a lot of great fights and obviously, you know, we’ve seen some mixed results for him. I think this is going to be one of my first fights. I mean, I fought in London at lightweight.”
“But I think this will be my real introduction to the lightweight division and I think a guy like Matt Frevola, who has fought some of the best guys in the division, will be a great test for me. I think I can prove myself and come in with a little more power than I did at 145.”
“And as we’ve seen, you know, Frevola, he’s been hit and knocked down before. So I think we’ll probably see that again.”
As the 34-year-old enters the lightweight scene, he will take on an ex-foe of Arman Tsarukyan, who was set to challenge for the UFC lightweight title in January. In terms of how this fight could potentially positively impact his trajectory in this new weight category if he achieves his ideal result, Nelson joked:
“Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I think yeah, I mean, I’ve seen Matt Frevola’s style. I think I fit his style well, you know. But it’s definitely going to be an exciting fight.”
