Light weights Tom Nolan and Charlie Campbell started the UFC Perth head card on Saturday, where the event had taken various hits before Fight Night.
Justin Tafa, Junior Tafa and Oban Elliott had all pulled themselves out of the map during the fighting week, while DOO-Ho Choi had stopped earlier. Four fighting, four somewhat recognizable names and a general lack of star power had led to slow ticket sales for the return of the promotion to the RAC -Arena on Saturday – not that the fighters would probably think about it.
Nolan started the first round with a good body stick on reach. Campbell circled away and landed a good low leg kick from his own. Nolan fights from the Southpaw attitude and was hit with a huge left hand that dropped him on the floor. Campbell marched forward looking for closing the competition, but Nolan returned to keep the charging Campbell at a distance. Halfway through the first round, Campbell got the inside of boxing exchanges on the inside. Both hunters stood and exchanged large strokes in the middle of the cage, where Nolan wanted to do his work in the conflict.
Nolan now saw a fast first round at the attack and puts Campbell in the clinch with an over -hand law. Press Campbell against the fence Nolan landed a Takedown and skilfully pushed his arm around his opponent’s neck. Tom Nolan was able to go to the back with full control over Campbell and was able to lock up a rear naked choke entrance. This was a huge victory, the young career of Tom Nolan, who just fought through setbacks to finish another dangerous prospect in the division. On 6’3, Nolan has a huge potential at 155 pounds.
In his interview after the fight, Nolan stated that he “just received his Black Belt” and was happy that he achieved his first professional entry victory.
Official result: Tom Nolan Def. Charlie Campbell by submission (chake choke), round 1, 4:08
