UFC legend Robert Whittaker has given his opinion on who is the greatest featherweight of all time, with Alexander Volkanovski and Ilia Topuria topping the list.
Tonight, Alexander Volkanovski will collide with Diego Lopes with the UFC featherweight championship on the line. While many believe Volk will be able to do enough to get the win, as he did in their first meeting, there’s no denying that Lopes’ power is a real threat – which we saw when he dropped ‘The Great’ last year.
But beyond that, Alexander Volkanovski is looking to cement his case as the greatest featherweight in the history of the UFC, and perhaps all of mixed martial arts. He’s certainly in the twilight of his career at this point, but if he continues to rack up impressive wins, it’ll be hard to deny him at the top of that mountain.
In a recent appearance, Robert Whittaker gave his thoughts on both Alexander Volkanovski and the insanely talented former featherweight champion Ilia Topuria.
Robert Whittaker on the Alexander Volkanovski/Ilia Topuria debate
“I feel like he has to be at the top of my list, almost at the top, because of the work he’s done,” Whittaker said of Topuria on the UFC 325 morning weigh-in show. “I understand that, but he dismantled great after great and then moved up a weight class and dismantled another great. I feel like you can’t ignore that.
“I feel like you can’t ignore the fact that he took out Volk and Max. Volk is at the top of my list because it’s Volk. He’s been running that division since day one, period, and it’s Volk. I’m biased. Volk is my number 1, Ilia is my number 2. Volk and Max were the boogeyman of that division. They ran through people, fights were only close when they fought each other and then Ilia dismantled them both.”
