Can Lerone Murphy and Aaron Pico fight for a crack at UFC Gold?
The two will collide on Saturday in the Co-Main event of UFC 319. Pico was initially linked to a confrontation with Movsar Evloev, but instead he will get an undefeated competition in Murphy. With regard to the use of the matchup, Murphy does not buy in the ranking.
Nevertheless, “The Miracle” reporters said that he regards this competition as an opportunity to compete for the UFC Featherweight Championship (via Inappropriate).
“Beating Aaron Pico will place me at that no. 1 candidate,” said Murphy. “He had to fight against Movsar, as you know, and Movsar was injured or sick or whatever happened. So I am now the replacement. This is a no. 1 candidate fight.”
A lot has been made about the upcoming UFC debut for Pico, who had a lot of Buzz despite early setbacks in his career. The will of former Bellator star Patricio “Pitbull” Freire and Patchy Mix could not win their UFC debut, although Freire recently picked up his first victory in the promotion Dan Ige. Murphy revealed an important difference with Pico.
“… You go back to the will of a fragmentary mix and things like that, I just think that comes down on MatchUp. These other boys who have come over those who have not performed may not have been in their prime. I think Aaron Pico’s in his Prime. So I expect to see the best version of him.”
Some believe that Pico may already have set himself up for failure with his back and forth exchanges with current UFC Vederweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski. If Pico can pick up an impressive victory over Murphy, Buzz will have a fever for a potential confrontation with Volkanovski. Murphy can play spoiler and get closer than ever to a UFC option option on Saturday.
