Tyron Woodley reflects on the demise of his UFC world title reign

Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has spoken candidly about what went wrong for him towards the end of his reign.

As UFC welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley was able to successfully retain/defend the title four times against Stephen Thompson, Demian Maia and Darren Till. Moreover, he won the title thanks to a nasty knockout victory over former champion Robbie Lawler.

However, then Tyron Woodley lost the title at the hands of Kamaru Usman, beginning a losing streak that would continue for the rest of his mixed martial arts career. These days he’s dabbling in the world of boxing, and tomorrow night he’ll clash with Anderson Silva as part of the Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua card.

Ahead of that bout, Tyron Woodley took time to reflect on his tenure as UFC champion in a recent interview.

Tyron Woodley discusses the demise of his UFC title run

“A lot of people don’t know this. I was the first and maybe the only fighter to negotiate three fights in one go,” Woodley told MMA Fighting. ‘I negotiated fighting [Kamaru] Usman and when I got the win with Usman, I had to fight Colby Covington and defend the belt. If I beat Colby Covington, I could move up in weight and fight for that title. That was my game plan.

“At that point in my career, I lost focus and focused too much on the lifestyle and too much on the things that came with it. Women, parties – not like drinking and drugs and all that – but just being at the Maxim 100 party. I got invited everywhere and I just became a socialite. I feel like that took the place where the center should have been.”
