After 13 years, Manchester City has confirmed the departure of director of Voetbal Txiki Begiristain. He will be replaced by Sporting CPs Hugo Viana.
After a disappointing campaign 2024–25, Begiristain leaves in which City ended the season without a trophy. His output also comes if the club continues to be given more than 100 charges due to alleged infringements of the financial rules of Premier League.
The former Barcelona director played an important role in shaping the recent success of the city, after he played a key role to bring Pep Guardiola to Etihad in 2016. The couple were teammates in Barcelona and maintained a narrow working relationship during their time in Manchester.
“Everyone in Manchester City wants to thank Txiki for everything he achieved at the club during his time, and we look forward to paying tribute to his excellent contribution in September,” the club said in a statement.
Begiristain previously played the same role in Barcelona from 2003 to 2010, where he also supervised the appointment of Guardiola as head coach in 2008.
In a farewell chat with City Studios, Begiristain said:
“I said to (CEO of Man City) Ferran (Soriano):” I will handle the transition of Pep for you. ” And then you renewed another two years.
