The police have arrested the driver of a Thar SUV who rammed into an e-rikshaw in the canton area of ​​Lunkknow, so that two dead and six others were seriously injured, said civil servants.

The accused, identified as Akshay Pratap Singh aka Ani, was taken into custody on Saturday from his flat in Sushant Golf City.

According to the police, the incident took place late on Friday evening when Singh, who was at high speed, crashed head-on with an e-rickshaw with devoted people on their way to the Khatu Shyam temple.

The impact killed two victims who were identified on the spot like Umesh and Mohit, while six other passengers were critical injuries.

The police said that the accused left his vehicle and fled after the crash. The SUV was later traced and seized by researchers.

Senior officers confirmed that the victims were inhabitants of the area and had hired the e-rickshaw to travel to the temple together.

After the arrest, Singh is questioned and further legal action is underway, the police said.

The accident caused the indignation among the locals, with many who point to the dangers of reckless driving in the city.
