Two players from Australia’s women’s World Cup cricket team were allegedly inappropriately stalked and touched while in India for the women’s ODI cricket tournament.
A man has been arrested and charged.
The incident is said to have occurred near the team hotel on Thursday morning, the day after Australia’s six-wicket victory over England.
The players have received support and are believed to be OK to continue playing in the tournament.
Australia’s group stage match against South Africa in the city went ahead on Saturday.
“[Cricket Australia] can confirm that two members of the Australian women’s team were inappropriately approached and touched by a motorcyclist while walking to a cafe in Indore,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson said on Saturday evening.

“The matter has been reported by team security to the police who are handling the case.”

Rajesh Dandotiya, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, told Indian news agency ANI that “the security officers of the Australian women’s cricket team had lodged a complaint that two members of the team were engaging in inappropriate behaviour”.

“The suspect was identified and arrested after an intensive strategic operation,” he said.
The man has been charged under sections 74 and 78 of the Criminal Code, which relate to assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty and stalking respectively.
“It is a highly condemnable but stray incident,” Devajit Saikia, secretary of the Board of Control of Cricket in India, said in a statement.
“We appreciate the state police [of Madhya Pradesh] for their quick action to catch the perpetrator. Let the law take its course and punish the perpetrator.”

The statement added: “We assure that we will review our security protocols as necessary to further tighten security. Despite our efforts to ensure security, this has somehow happened and we therefore fully condemn it.”

The Madhya Pradesh Local Cricket Association issued a statement saying they were “deeply pained and shocked by the disturbing incident of misconduct and inappropriate behaviour”.
‘As a host [Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association] “sincerely apologizes to the Australian women’s team for this deeply disturbing and unfortunate incident,” the statement said.
Australia have spent much of this tournament in Indore, a city of five and a half million in west-central India, while their clash with South Africa was their third match at the Holkar Stadium.
Players leave the city on Sunday, with a semi-final against India in Navi Mumbai on Thursday.
