President Donald Trump has threatened to block the opening of a major bridge connecting Detroit, Michigan, to the Canadian province of Ontario if that happens Mark CarneyThe country-led country is not involved in trade negotiations with Washington.
The respect we deserve
On Monday, Trump took to the social media platform Truth Social to criticize the bridge. He began the post by saying that Canada had treated the U.S. “very unfairly for decades.” Trump also shared that Canada owns both sides of the bridge and that it was “built without American content.”
Beating former president Barack Hussein ObamaHe said Obama “stupidly” gave Canada a “waiver” that allowed the country to avoid the Buy American Act, which says the federal government must give preference to American-made products.
Deal between China and Canada
Trump said Ottawa expects him to “take advantage of America,” sharing that the U.S. would receive no benefits and Canada would not sell American liquor and alcohol in the country. “Prime Minister Carney wants to make a deal with China – which will eat Canada alive,” Trump said.
He added that China would end ice hockey in Canada and end the Stanley Cup. He also said Canadian tariffs on U.S. dairy products are unacceptable to American farmers.
According to a New York Times article Since March of last year, Canada has implemented a tariff quota system for U.S.-made dairy products, meaning the dairy products can enter without tariffs, provided they don’t exceed certain import quotas, which they don’t. Therefore, the rates for these products are not activated.
“I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them,” he said, adding that negotiations would begin immediately and the US should own “at least half of this asset,” touting “astronomical” revenues for America.
Trump’s previous tariff threats
The comments come as Trump threatened to impose 100% tariffs on Canada following the China EV deal. “If Canada makes a deal with China, the country will immediately be hit with a 100% tariff on all Canadian goods and products entering the US,” Trump had said.
He also said he was revoking the certifications of all Canadian aircraft in the US, while also threatening to impose 50% tariffs on Canada unless US Gulfstream aircraft are certified in the country.
