President Donald Trump said Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker should receive prison sentences for “failing to protect” Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. Illinois sued the federal government on Monday in an effort to stop the deployment of the National Guard. The case was assigned to District Court Judge April M. Perry, who held oral arguments Thursday. Illinois accused the Trump administration of using a “weak pretext” to justify the need for troops. According to the complaint filed by Illinois, the Trump administration said they were needed to protect an ICE facility in the Chicago suburb of Broadview. The state said local and state authorities “were able to maintain the peace” during protests at the facility. Texas Governor Greg Abbott previously confirmed he authorized 400 members of the Texas National Guard to protect federal officials in Chicago and Pritzker’s office said the administration plans to federalize 300 members of the Illinois National Guard. Troops from Texas were expected to deploy to Chicago on Wednesday before the ruling New York Times And CBS News reported.

Illinois joined other Democratic states, including California and Oregon, in challenging the Trump administration’s attempt to send National Guard troops to Portland this weekend. The Portland deployment was blocked until Oct. 18 by District Court Judge Karin Immergut, who ruled that Trump’s claims that the city had been “ravaged by war” had no factual basis. Immergut cited law enforcement in the city, which reported that the protests at an ICE facility consisted of a handful of demonstrators “mostly sitting in lawn chairs and walking around. The energy was low, minimal activity.” Immergut later blocked the administration from deploying National Guard troops to Portland from any state after the Trump administration attempted to deploy troops from California for the same purpose.
