Trio of ‘Fivers’ See Dominant Season on Isle of Wight – Table Tennis England

The island of Wight’s table tennis season is now almost over, without a doubt until the Winter League starts in October.

While we look back in the past year, we see that the different tournaments were dominated by three players – Ryan Cates, Alex Rorke and Paul Rainford (depicted from left to right above) – referred to as the “Fivers” because they have each won five trophies. Here are the details:

RYAN CATES – Isle of Wight Men’s Singles and Junior Champion. Division 1 winner and winner of the Doubles and Mixed Doubles Championships.

Alex Rork – Hardbat singles and doubles the winner. Summer League and disabled double winner. Also second place in the island of Echo Handicap.

Paul Rainford – Division 1 winner. Champion of more than 40 and 60 and 60 and double champion. Also second place in the men’s Singles Championships.

Paul and Ryan are teammates but also opponents. They were partners in winning the Men Doubles Championship and the League Division 1, but opponents in the men’s Singles Championship, which Ryan won.

It was a great season for all three players. They are great ambassadors for the sport and always willing to pass on guidance and advice to younger players.
