The animosity between Manchester United and Liverpool is so enormous that it has been more than sixty years since a player moved directly between the clubs.
United indirectly signed former Liverpool superstar Michael Owen in 2009. After struggles at Real Madrid and Newcastle United, Owen joined the Red Devils in the hope of reviving his career.
Now United are said to be considering handing another Liverpool academy graduate a lifeline after a disappointing spell in the Spanish capital.
Real Madrid expects interest from the Premier League for Trent Alexander-Arnold
27-year-old Trent Alexander-Arnold ended his contract with Real Madrid for almost nothing last summer.
The hugely controversial decision led to Alexander-Arnold facing the wrath of Liverpool fans despite his two-decade association with the Reds.
However, the Englishman has struggled to adapt to life in Spain due to tactical and fitness issues. He made just five appearances in La Liga under Xabi Alonso.
According to a report in Central Defensea number of Premier League clubs want to take advantage of his precarious situation at Real.
Los Blancos remain confident in his future but are thought to be bracing for questions over Alexander-Arnold’s availability next summer.
Manchester United have joined the race to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold
The Spanish outlet claim United, Manchester City and Newcastle United are all interested in Alexander-Arnold.
It is added that United would have no problem paying €40 million to secure his signature from Real. Such an offer would be “attractive” for the La Liga giants, who paid just £10 million (€11.4 million) to sign him from Liverpool ahead of the 2025 Club World Cup.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s stats by club
| Club | Performances | Goals | Assists | Yellow cards |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Liverpool | 354 | 23 | 92 | 45 |
| Real Madrid | 16 | – | 3 | – |
However, as things stand, Real are not considering the possibility of parting ways with the England international.
Alexander-Arnold is regarded as one of the best attacking full-backs in Premier League history. He has everything it takes to play as a full-back under Ruben Amorim.
However, it would be very difficult for United to convince him to move to Theater of Dreams given the connection with Liverpool.
