  • 2023-present Toyota Grand Highlander

  • 2017-2024 Toyota Camry

  • 2022-present NX 250

  • 2022-present NX 350

  • 2024-present Lexus TX 350

The problems are reportedly in the UA80 8-speed automatic transmissions, the torque converters and the software.

The UA80 transmission reportedly has a design flaw that creates heat that burns the transmission fluid, causing premature transmission failure. According to the lawsuit, this is a dangerous situation that could cause a vehicle to suddenly come to a stop while driving.

According to the class action, another problem with the UA80 transmission is Toyota’s software, which is believed to cause premature upshifts and torque converter clutch engagement. This also causes premature failure of the UA80 transmission.

Toyota UA80 Transmission Lawsuit – The Plaintiff

Nevada prosecutor James LeBoutheller bought a new 2020 Toyota Camry He continued to drive the car after a Toyota dealer inspected the transmission and said everything was normal.

In November 2025, when his Camry had about 120,000 miles on it, he took it to a dealer because of the transmission noise. After 30 days, the Toyota dealer said no repairs were necessary because the transmission was operating normally.

At some point later, the plaintiff took his vehicle to another Toyota dealer, where he was told that aluminum particles had been found in the transmission fluid, requiring replacement of the UA80 transmission. Toyota agreed to offer a free transmission replacement but told the plaintiff he would have to pay labor costs.

According to the class action lawsuit, the transmission replacement would “result in being charged several thousand dollars” for a replacement UA80 transmission that would also fail.

“Even if the transmission assembly in Plaintiff LeBoutheller’s vehicle is replaced, all replacement transmission assemblies are subject to the same defects complained of herein and thus Plaintiff LeBoutheller will still be subject to damages arising from the transmission defect.” — Lawsuit against Toyota UA80 transmission

According to the lawsuit, no recall was issued for the Toyota UA80 transmission because of the problems, even though Toyota had known about the problems for years.

Toyota also reportedly did not offer customers free repairs or replacements, and customers were not reimbursed for the UA80’s transmission problems.

The Toyota UA80 transmission lawsuit was filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas (Sherman Division): James LeBoutheller v. Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc., et al.

The plaintiff is represented by Steckler Wayne & Love, PLLC, and Barrack, Rodos & Bacine.
