2 minutes, 40 seconds Read

The Italian Jonathan Milan escaped a spectacular stack of flying bicycles and bodies to win phase 17 of the Tour de France on Wednesday in lugging rain, extending his lead in the Sprint Points race.
The general leader Tadej Pogacar and his close rival Jonas Vingegaard (4 minutes behind) ended safely despite a massive fall of 800 meters from the finish line at the Valence at the foot of the Alps.
On the rain lick roads in Valence as soon as a rider had fallen, his endless slide sent over the asphalt riders as cones flying and left only 10 behind to dispute the sprint.
“It was chaotic but incredible. I expected a little rain. We placed as well as possible and the boys placed me in the best place just before autumn,” Milan said.

This was a second phase victory for Milan, who since 2019 considers the first phase of Italy on Stage.

The 24-year-old Lidl Trek Rider now has 312 points and is in a powerful position to win the battle for the Green Jersey in Paris, since Pogacar is second at 240 ..

While the remaining 164 riders started the Sleepy Provence village Bollene, the collective will of the peloton provided a slow approach of the Alps.
Invoated as a stage of a sprinters on an unusually mild day, the riders were also spared from the predicted wind of 50 kilometers per hour.

But the rain robbed the stage of a full bunch of sprint because of the horrible fall.

The attention now focuses in three massive climbs, culminating in the climb to the 2304m Height Col de la Loze on stage 18.

Team of rider Pogacar seemed undisturbed.
“We can’t get arrogant, we have to keep it simple and stay still,” said the 26-year-old.

“I’m really looking forward to it. I have been beaten there before, but I have good legs and maybe I will take revenge,” he said.

After 10 opening days of rolling site in the north and west of France where Pogacar and Vingegaard kept an eye on each other while rising riders stole the headlines, week two was where the real fight began.

The title defender Pogacar attacked the Dane Vingegaard on the first mountain and finished more than two minutes ahead of the climb of the Hautacam.

The next day, on a normal bike on a time trial, Pogacar Pogacar was 37 seconds faster than the Visma star, which took more than seven minutes from the Slovenian during the climb of the Col de la Loze in 2023. That climb was set to conclude phase 18 of this year’s race.
Another Slovenian rider Matej Mohoric from Bahrain Victorious said he was convinced that Pogacar would close his fourth Tour de France victory.
“He was born with a machine in him and he was born with the brain to use that machine,” said Mohoric.
