The week after the Ryder Cup is sometimes just as juicy as what happens during Ryder Cup Week. Golf’s writers and editors break down the fall -out of Bethpage Black, the response to unmanageable fans, who must apply for the following, and more.
In the days after the victory of the Europa Ryder Cup in Bethpage Black, a lot of the conversation focused on the fans, the hecking and the response, by players, golf legends, organizers and more. Is the Ryder Cup experience out of hand? Or is part of this exaggerated?
Jessica Marksbury, senior editor (@jess_marksbury): Loud and partisan crowds make the Ryder Cup fun, but it sounds like things have gone exaggerated this year. The kind of vitriol that was reported is against the spirit of the event – and the sport itself – and that is a shame, because noisy atmosphere can and still have to be respectful. It is some tournaments that open the WM Phoenix that are so loved. But there is clearly a nice line there.
Sean Zak, senior writer (@Sean_zak): Would not call it ‘out of hand’, but rather ‘not controlled’. Events organizers clearly did not have the right protocols to manage for non -repellent verbal abuse. I think you saw that when removing certain Hecklers from certain pairs. I.e It’s okay to bring your absurd show to another part of the real estateInstead of expelling them. I am not going to pretend it is simple – but I think there was not enough control, and we would benefit from seeing it for four years at Hazeltine.
Jack Hirsh, Associate Equipment Editor (@Jr_bresany): I think Rory McIlroy’s comments will be upside down on Sunday evening. Golf can stick to a higher standard. The Ryder Cup and the Phoenix Open are the only tournaments of the year where you even hear the track angry. How can it be alternated so far for people to name McIlroy and throw things at his wife, not to mention people shouting while Euros players were over shots? There is a clear and obvious line and this is crossed and fans who participated in it should be ashamed of themselves.
If something needs to be changed, what is the move?
Bag: Better communication – including the captain – better messages by the Emcee, better precedents set early in the week, etc. Oh, and when it seems to brew, go out ahead of them. On Saturday morning instead of Monday morning. Talking with fans who wait half a hole for the groups that receive the worst. That didn’t happen.
Marksbury: Shameless disruptive behavior may not be tolerated, full stop. There must be enough staff to identify and remove instigators – not to a new place on the track, but outside the building.
Hirsh: These are both good, but I saw a tweet on Monday that I agree with. Because the prices of tickets on this Ryder Cup were so absurd, the only people who could afford were not afraid of retribution of what they were doing. I think the PGA would appreciate the people who would have appreciated the Ryder Cup.

The next Ryder Cup is away for two years in Adare Manor in Ireland, and now the conversation turns to who the two squadrons lead. Is Luke Donald three in a row back? And who leads the US?
Bag: I think Luke will want to know WHO He is opposed because Captains are often reminded with regard to their competition. He will not hurry in that decision and will be six months to settle in. That said, I bet he is doing it again. He seems to enjoy it a lot.
For the Americans … HMPH. The shortlist seems to be 5-deep. Keegan Bradley, Stewart Cink, Brandt Snedeker, Jim Furyk and Tiger Woods. The one I think will do the best work is … Furyk. But Bradley would do well, I think. Much of this year’s cup was outside of his control, as is often the case.
Marksbury: It certainly sounded like Luke strongly would consider trying a three-pit. I would actually see Keegan if he would be good. It seemed as if the American players enjoyed his leadership and that says something after a loss. Given the list of other names that Sean drove, I am not sure who would be the next choice.
Hirsh: Bag, I believe it was you who mentioned that the next American captain should have the captain until he loses. Donald has not lost and seems to have covered everything. Even if he goes and loses three wins, he will still go down as one of the best European Ryder Cup captains.
I don’t even know for the US at the moment. Tiger seems to be the obvious choice, but is not sure if he could promote the team atmosphere that Europe has succeeded. I say back to Steve Stricker. Not even certain why he was not the captain in Rome.
In the run -up to Bethpage, Keegan Bradley had the opportunity to be a playing coat, although he chose not to pick himself and in retrospect it could have hurt the Americans without having him as a player. Should the PGA of America avoid this situation in 2027, so that Bradley has the opportunity to contribute as a player?
Bag: Uh, we should not count on a 41-year-old version of Keegan Bradley as the best version of Keegan Bradley. Especially with the many younger Americans who will certainly be better than 41-Yo Keegs. It is perhaps the most logical to offer the job to Bradley tomorrow and to say: “We will again handle the game captain thing if you crush it in 18 months.”
Marksbury: Given the way Keegan has played for the past two years, he may want to fully concentrate on the himself in the team! I am sure that the stress of a captain drifts even more than it seems. So yes, if Keegan is the choice, I agree with Sean – they have to lock it up as quickly as possible.
Hirsh: I don’t think Keegan should be a captain in 2027, so this is no problem for me!
Robert Macintyre won a weather-colored Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, the DP World Tour Stop that plays job list courses such as the old course in St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns. Is the Dunhill with visits to these locations (and the above -average fields that it usually produces) the most underrated stop in pro -golf? If not, what is it?
Bag: It is on the short list. However, the Aussie Open is above that. It is routinely visiting some of the best wave on the planet, and Melbourne doubles in December as a much better holiday destination than FIFE in October, with all due respect for my Scottish friends.
Marksbury: From the perspective of the eye framework, I am partly for the European masters and the epic views that can be seen in the Crans-sur-Sierre GC in Switzerland.
Hirsh: It is nice to know that St. Andrews gets a tournament every year. It is actually the AT&T Pebble Beach of the DP World Tour. I will also surrender the Irish Open in years that he goes to Royal County.
