This week we will discuss whether or not Keegan Bradley has made the right call with the picks of his Ryder Cup captain.
The American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley closed his team with the six captain of the picks he announced on Wednesday, and most were shocked to hear that Bradley did not choose himself (despite the 11th in the rankings). In the end, Bradley said that the six choices played their way to the team, and just acting as a captain is the best for the US, did he make the right decision? And was there more going on than that?
Josh Sens, senior writer (@joshsens): I am not sure if it was right or wrong, but it was absolutely disappointing, because it robbed the event of another storyline and this is supposed to be entertainment, right? But it is also an understandable move. By choosing himself, Bradley ran the risk of getting off as if he were placing himself above the team. He also seemed to be really convinced that multitasking of that kind would hurt more than it would help.
Josh Schrock, news editor (@Schrock_and_Awe): Has he made the right decision for the team? Probably. It is impossible to know if it is possible to be a successful playing captain, but I do think that the decision not to choose the 12 boys will galvanize in a way that rarely seems to be the case for the Americans. Was Bradley’s decision the right thing for Golf itself? I don’t think. The Ryder Cup is the largest event of Golf every two years, and having him as a play captain would have generated even more Buzz for a sport that tried to increase the number of viewers.
Josh Berhow, Managing Editor (@Josh_berhow): This thing has so many layers, but I think he has made the right decision for the team. He could certainly have contributed to a player, but I think there is something to say about the first posting of the other boys and the message that sends to them. Maybe it’s the motivation they need. Perhaps the Keegan is free to concentrate on the other things. It definitely takes away a big storyline and a distraction – and a bit of fun.

Some claimed that Bradley should have called his name, because his game has been good enough, he has history on the track and because it would add juice to an exhibition event that had not had a playing fat in more than 60 years. What do you think?
Sens: I think that’s a valid argument. But I wish Bradley had chosen himself because it would have been an opportunity to demythologize the role of Ryder Cup captain. Everyone in golf fans, players, media, surpassed about the work as if it requires the training, refinement and time commitment of brain surgery. I refuse to believe it is so complicated. It is nice to tell stories about how Paul Azinger’s pod system was genius, or how hall sutton ruined everything by linking Phil and Tiger, and so on. After all, this is mass -entertainment. It largely depends on stories like that. Certainly. The decisions of some captains are important. But is it really that complex? Six players automatically qualify. You choose six others who play well and then you come with couples. The rest comes down to which team better the pressure and holes handle more putts. That is my long way to say that I am sure that Bradley could have treated double duty, just as sure as he can walk and chewing gum.
Schrock: As mentioned above, I agree that the juice would have added to the event. But that is no reason for him to choose himself. He should have chosen himself because he is one of the 12 best American players, and if he wasn’t the leader, he would be in the team. The event will have all the required juice, but a little extra never hurts.
Berhow: No matter how cool it would have been to see that a Speelnap captain led the US, it is very unlikely that Keegan would have played more than twice. Three times absolutely max. But further, the Ryder Cup, just like the Majors, brings the Casual Golffan. And this is just a gamble, but I bet that a large number of them cannot save at all or understand the meaning of a playing fee captain. So I really don’t believe we have lost so much juice.

Which team does the greater chance of winning: this current one, with Bradley as a captain, or Bradley as a playing, with one of the six selections (take your choice) of the team?
Sens: Neither of them. The Europeans would have a stronger team on paper anyway.
Schrock: I think having Bradley in the team would give Americans a better chance to win. But just like Sens, I think Europe is better on paper.
Berhow: I think the team playing with Keegan had the better chance to win because he has been great this year and the exact type of player is that you want in this event. But Keegan gambles on choosing the right guys, not the best – to steal a line from Herb Brooks and “Miracle” – and that means that he focuses on just a captain. Although the captains get a lot of praise or debt, it really comes down to which team plays the best wave. The captain can help to motivate or strategize a bit, but these guys are pros. Go golf your ball. However, I will say this – I feel bad for Bradley. He could play this Ryder Cup, but a series of strange circumstances brought us to this. It must be stuck to sit outside, even if he thinks it’s the right call.

Which captain has the most pressure in itself to perform at Bethpage Black?
Sens: The seductive answer is Cameron Young, because he was 1) outside the top 12 in the rankings and 2) will play in his first cup for a home state group. But I would say that Sam Burns, because he was partially chosen for his great well, but also probably because of his friendship with Scottie Scheffler. You have to think that they are linked in some of the team competitions. And if a link with the number 1 player in the world is staggering, it is not difficult to find out where the debt will fall.
Schrock: It is burns. We know that Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley connect well together, so if that duo is disturbed so that Burns and Scheffler can play together, Burns must perform. It also seems to me that Bradley’s choice was between himself and Burns, so let the captain no regret of his Ryder Cup -Drome.
Berhow: Why not Patrick Cantlay? He was the conversation of the Ryder Cup 2023, And you know that the storyline comes up again at Bethpage. He was also 15th in the rankings (between Young and Burns), so Bradley had to reach to get him. Moreover, he did not play his best in major events this year – he missed the last three major cuts of the season.
Happy Labor Day Weekend, where golfers benefit from the bonus day free and set it up. What is your favorite course under the radar you played this summer?
Sens: The newly re -made Poppy Ridge in Liermander, California, is not a complete sleeper, given his status as a brother or sister to Poppy Hills in Monterey. But it is in the quiet outskirts of the Bay Area, and it is a really great course. Jay Blasi took the best country of three existing nines to create a walking -friendly 18 with all kinds of interesting variety. Apart from Pasatiempo. I don’t think there is a better public entry course within an hour of San Francisco, and the price is good (if you keep track of your handicap at the Northern California Golf Association, you can play it for less than $ 100).
Schrock: Although I didn’t play Ton Golf this summer. But if someone who is new in the Philadelphia area, I really enjoyed Inniscone. It’s very nice. It is the first design by Gil Hanse and presents a tough test. Not super under the radar, but new for me!
Berhow: I played little wave this year (but I attended many 8 hours of softball games) but I hope to explore Northern Michigan Golf next year. But even more importantly, did anyone else realize that we had three Joshes Answer Tour confidential last night? A Miracle from Labor Day Weekend We will never forget.
