Tottenham Hotspur travel to St James’ Park tonight to take on Newcastle United in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
The Lilywhites have struggled against the Magpies in recent years, losing their last three games in a row, including the 6-1 defeat a few years ago. The last time Spurs beat Newcastle at St James’ Park was in 2021.
However, Tottenham Hotspur have started well this season under new manager Thomas Frank, and they will hope to improve on their recent poor record against Eddie Howe’s side tonight.
Team news
Tottenham have been plagued by injury problems in the opening months of this season, with Yves Bissouma, Ben Davies, Radu Dragusin, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison and Koto Takai sidelined due to their respective problems.
On the other hand, Dominic Solanke, Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie have taken a step further recovery to get back to full fitness, but this match will come too early for them to be involved.
Predicted lineup
Frank is unlikely to make many changes to his starting line-up, which defeated Everton in the Premier League last weekend. However, Antonin Kinsky could get the chance to start in goal ahead of Guglielmo Vicario.
Micky Van de Ven should line up alongside Kevin Danso at the heart of the Spurs defense in Romero’s absence, with Pedro Porro and Djed Spence likely to be the two wing-backs.
João Palhinha has made a promising start this season since joining on loan from Bayern Munich and is expected to keep his place in defensive midfield.
Rodrigo Bentancur could line up alongside the Portuguese, while Lucas Bergvall is likely to complete the midfield trio for the north London club. So Archie Gray is expected to be among the replacements.
Wilson Odobert should fill the lefty role, and Brennan Johnson could be on the other side. Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus would therefore act as replacements if necessary.
Mathys Tel, valued at around £31 million Transfer marketmay be given the responsibility of managing the north London club, and Richarlison could have to make do with a place on the bench.
Expected line-up of Tottenham against Newcastle
Kinsky; Porro, Danso, Van de Ven, Spence; Palhinha, Bentancur, Bergvall; Odobert, Tel, Johnson
