Ben Shelton is clearly ready to join Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz to set up the ‘Big Three’ of this new generation after his very powerful and strong performance to reach the final of the National Bank Open in Toronto, better known as the Canadian Masters.
I have seen so many major improvements this week. So that’s what I’m most happy with – the way I play, how I execut, how little I hesitate Ben Shelton
The young Floridian was expected to give the second seed and world no.4, a good match and there was always a chance that he could beat his countryman Taylor Swift, but the higher-ranked American was simply overwhelmed by the 22-year-old.
Shelton, ranked on 7, achieved a 6-4 6-3 victory to reach his first Master 1000-level event final and if he has to pick up the trophy, he will rise a muscle of the ranking, whereby Novak Djokovic is moved in the process.
And on his current form, he would be a favorite to replace Alexei Pofyrin as a champion who lost in the quarterfinals, after he also defeated another top ten player, Alex de Minaur in straight sets to make the last four.
His record for the season is an impressive 26 wins after claiming the first set, for just one loss and that was for Alejandro Davidovic Fokina at the Monte Carlo Masters. He has actually lost 16 times this season, but has scored 31 victories and is happy with his progress because he is now about to win the biggest title of his career, his third and first of the year.
“For me it is the level – 100%. I am just looking for things in my game to just improve a little, and I have seen so many big improvements this week. So that’s what I am most happy with – the way I play, how I executed how little I hesitate,” Shelton said.
“There are many things to be proud of and it is huge for me to beat two top 10 boys.”
The match was the first All-American Semi since 2010 and Shelton has picked up six breaking points against the mostly solid Taylor-Serve in the opening set, which eventually turns into a turnover in the ninth match with a thunderous Forehand winner.
A good forerunner, Shelton stopped the pressure in the second and claimed the decisive break in the fifth match with a drop shot-lob combination that Fritz hit on the net.
Shelton hit 22 not -Geretourned serves for the 10, five backhand winners from Fritz to Fritz’s Zero and raised 10 break points.
“When he is in a corner, he is one of the best in the world to be behind the ball and it gets harder every time. I knew I had to keep him moving and I did great work … I felt like I had the ball on a rope,” Shelton said.
“I am just very enthusiastic to see myself executing, not to wonder if the shot goes in, but expect it to go in …”

There was another upset in the upper half of the draw, because the favorite of the title, the champion 2017 and the top seeds, was survived by Karen Khahanov in a three -hour struggle.
Earlier in the day, the Russian, arranged on 16 and sowed 11, held on a 6-3 4-6 7-6 (4) victory to make his second performance at a Masters-level event that previously won Paris in 2018.
After a debilitating three -hour match, Khachanov admitted that he had to dig deep to lift his game to numb the German.
“I had to dig deeply and raise my level. It was a very demanding, very mental, very physical match. So I am very happy to win after losing a few easy to him in recent years. Today was a real close. I was a match point down, if the ball hit and drip, said,” said. “
A two-time former semi-finalist, Khachanov made 17 casual forehand errors, but more importantly, the Zverev Serve stuttered with 7 double errors, but his most expensive mistake was when he was his opponents in second place on Match Point with a backhand with a backhand that he would normally take.
“I thought I was very brave in the tie-break, I just missed it,” Zverev admitted. “That is one thing I wanted to change, it’s one thing I wanted to work on … I missed some balls that I wanted I wouldn’t have missed, but that’s how it is. In general I didn’t feel the ball well, so it’s normal that you miss a little more in situations like this.
In the Dubbels Second Seeds Cash and Glasspool, their winning series extended to 18 games by beating the fourth seeds Kevin Krawirtz and Tim Puetz 6-3.7-6 (2) on Tuesday to continue to their eighth final of the season. The British duo, currently the World No. 1 -Team, strives for his fifth trophy of the year.
