Welcome to GOLF’s Top 100 Teacher roundtable discussion, where some of the best instructors in the industry answer the game’s most pressing questions. The goal? To help your game and lower your scores as quickly as possible.
Advice in golf is a dime a dozen. Whether it’s your friend with a 15 handicap or a seasoned professional, everyone has ways to help you achieve lower scores.
This is a bit of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you are never without advice. On the other hand, you will never know what is really useful and what is not.
Luckily for you, dear reader, here at GOLF we have access to some of the brightest minds in the game in the form of our Top 100 Teachers. That’s why we decided to ask some of them for the best advice they’ve ever heard.
Check out their answers below.
1. Don’t try to make putts
I once heard Mr. Nicklaus say that he never tried to make a putt over six feet; he was just trying to roll it at the right speed. This is good advice because better catching speed will result in more putts falling on the edges. Plus, you’ll be three-putting far fewer times. —Jason Carbone
2. Always play it
When I was 16 years old, the PGA Pro I was being taught by told me to play the ball all the time instead of using the winter rules. This really helped my ball hitting. If you learn to hit the ball well (even from a bad lie), you will become a much better ball striker and player. —Mark Durland
3. Control what you have control over
“There is no excuse for a static error.” This means that you should always consider variables that you can check before you even swing. Your clubs should fit you, they should be clean, you should have an extra towel in your bag, etc. If you eliminate your “static” mistakes, you will be prepared to play great golf. —Tim Cooke
4. Focus on your short game
Spend twice the amount of time you spend on the course having fun and creativity around the greens. This will help you develop a reliable short game with different types of shots. —Martin Chuck
