There are definitely games this weekend with two higher ranked teams. But there’s nothing more exciting taking place than Friday night’s game between UConn and St. John’s at Madison Square Garden in New York.
It’s hard to top.
The Huskies and Red Storm enter this matchup having won 26 consecutive games between them: 18 in a row for UConn, eight in a row for St. John’s. The fact that the Huskies are road favorites at MSG suggests these teams remain in different places. Regardless, after starting 9-5 with a loss to Providence that put the Red Storm at a point where they received zero votes in the AP Top 25 poll, they have done nothing but win and are clearly moving in the right direction.
Is this somewhat the byproduct of a weak Great East?
Perhaps considering that more than half the conference is outside the top 80 in the NET, and especially considering that St. John’s winning streak features zero wins over opponents in the top 30 in the NET. Anyway, for whatever it’s worth, if you look at the numbers on BartTorvik.com, St. John’s is 8-0 since Jan. 6 and performing like a top-15 team in the country. Again, that’s moving in the right direction and there’s some data to support the idea that we could get a classic in Midtown Manhattan later Friday.
UConn is ranked No. 2 in the updated CBS Sports Top 25 and 1 daily college basketball rankings as of Friday morning. St. John’s is No. 22. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET. The entry price on the secondary market is reportedly $195, as of Friday morning.
